"MUSICⅥ ~Horn~" is an art piece where musical elements are intricately intertwined with the form and function of a shoe, quietly but surely resonating with the viewer's heart. This work, showcased at a solo exhibition held at GEKKOSO, captivated many visitors with its unique form and innovative design, leaving a lasting impression.
The evaluation by GEKKOSO’s owner, Kozo Hibi, succinctly captures the philosophical depth of this piece. "It reminds me of the brushstrokes of a great calligrapher―smooth and flowing leather movements. The design, thoroughly thought out, transcends shape and emerges as the philosophical form of the horn. The welt connecting the insole and outsole is hollowed out in the shape of the horn, showing not just visual resemblance but also a deep insight." Misawa’s design goes beyond mere appearance, considering the structure of music and the meaning embedded in the instrument itself.
The creation of this work was driven by Misawa's strong intent. He has always felt a significant pressure regarding Kozo Hibi, whose discerning eye he deeply respects. Along with this respect, there was a desire to not only satisfy him but to astonish him, strengthening his resolve in the creative process. In fact, the work was completed in just 1.5 months, and this piece, supported by precise calculation and deep insight, is the result of that focused effort.
The material used for the work, "vegetable-tanned leather," is one that Misawa has preferred in recent years. This leather, left uncolored, changes in texture over time and becomes uniquely beautiful with use. For Misawa, selecting this material was a challenge, as it requires confronting the raw essence of the leather without the possibility of hiding imperfections. In creating this piece, Misawa committed to bringing out the leather’s full expression, without compromise.
Moreover, in terms of shape, the curves of the horn are boldly expressed, and the form carries a musical rhythm. The hollowed-out structure of the welt is not simply a visual imitation, but is inspired by the air passage within the horn, showing a profound connection. Through such design choices, Misawa successfully merges the worlds of music and footwear, creating art that appeals to both the visual and auditory senses.
As Kozo Hibi described, "A work imbued with the creator's tone, filled with both a menacing intensity and an alluring sensuality," this "MUSICⅥ ~Horn~" is not only visually rich but also a piece that can actually be worn. Beyond its expression as art, this work offers the unique experience of feeling music through the act of wearing it. In this way, the work reveals further depth and expansion.
